Nature gets freaky

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

There seems to be this visceral fascination in people with animals that look improbable.  I found yet another site listing the “20 weirdest animals” some time ago, and thought I’d share.

I found it through Stumbleupon, which is where I get a lot of good blog fodder.  I’ve noticed lately, though, that the material I find on SU doesn’t seem nearly as good as it was a few months ago.  I don’t know if it’s the massive influx of new people & sites, or if I’ve just run through all the good sites that were strong matches for my profile.

Culture shock

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Want to learn about the strange things that are par for the course in other cultures?

Try reading one of their phrasebooks.

Excerpts:

  • Russian: I want a specimen of your urine.
  • Hindi: Do you practice safe sex?
  • Portuguese: Must I swallow them whole?

Great dangling duck dicks, Batman!

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

duck dickApparently several species of duck, including Meller’s duck from Madagascar and an Argentine duck, have gotten into a reproductive evolutionary war with their sex organs. They start growing a phallus at the beginning of the mating season, and it grows (up to longer than the duck itself) through the rest of the season.

Read the NYT article on duck dicks.

One eyed kid

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Probably not the kind of kid you first thought of… Cybergoat has pictures of a cyclopic goat. Scroll about halfway down and you can see several different pictures of the kid, who died minutes after birth.

Also, links to a page showing several different cat deformities including multiple ears and multiple faces.

Finally, thanks to Snopes for chiming in on the cyclopic cat and the entrancing, if freaky, links!

(The skinny: according to Snopes, the one-eyed kitten is for real.)statistics
